| go outside.... |

back in the 90's, whilst trawling the airwaves, i discovered a test broadcast that i was fascinated by, i'd never heard anything like this on the radio, although it was instantly recognisable. i recorded it and it became a firm favourite for many years for times when i could not sleep. i was not alone with the machine it seemed. i had a virtual dawn chorus at my fingertips...
i still cherish my lp of 'songs of the humpback whale'. the yanks sent it to the stars with voyager with big hello from everyone... these days though you can help whale research by attempting to match snippets of whalesong. some kind of whale dating agency, if you like.
or, when insomnia is getting too much you can mix your own slumber track of course if you are lucky enough to be a technician at arecibo, you could just go outside...

a skyscraper erupts from the island of my shin launched from my flesh like an intercontinental ballistic missile
a dead woodpecker offered to the sky by a dead tree asuages short-tempered teenage gods for a while fingers fluttering like a zombie still cooking recipes...
my vagabond spirit gleefully teaches a daddylonglegs to tightrope walk dangerously close to the swirling plughole
the abalone acts like a fountain washing my lifeless hair floating flowers towards the semi-headless man tightening the tightrope, slipping from the slopes of the volcano
into the sea to meet the fate of my party dress. if you listen carefully, you can still hear the faint crashing of the waves.
at least the ancestors are obvious if not a little judgemental in the undergrowth observing calmly by receeding waters
heaven, hell and here three places at once blood trickles from the overflow to gently cloud the scene

not particularly impressed with this year's loebner prize winner... she repeats herself too much...yawn. are you friends with a bot? the bots are loose... wandering around. pretending to be someone you know...
Rosette: Hi, again,. How are you doing? You: i'm stoned Rosette: Nice to meet you, stoned. May I call you stoned? You: no you may not Rosette: Them's the breaks. Do you live around here? You: yes. i live around the ether Rosette: I wouldn't have thought that about you. I've got a dilemma. Maybe you could help me with it? You: do go on... Rosette: Could you ask someone else who might know more? I've been thinking about buying this really cool dress, but I've already done a bunch of shopping this month. Should I be saving money instead? In today's economy, does saving money make any sense? You: if you love the dress enough you will buy the dress... Rosette: Great. I'll buy it when I get home. You: how much is the dress? Rosette: It's a low neckline, black dress, with lace edging. It'd be great for dancing in. You: how much? Rosette: More than I can afford. I think shopping summons up the ancient hunter-gatherer in me. I like having a mission to find something I need or want. Sometimes I'll research on line, to find a great deal, but I like rummaging through Jeremy's up the road, if I want an outfit for a special occasion, or just for fun. You: well i've gone out hunting, and i killed an alien... Rosette: I'm not that into exercise. You: touche Rosette: So tell me, do you have any hobbies? You: i like attractive women Rosette: Do you tend to like most things? You: i have lots of likes yes Rosette: That's nice. What kind of music do you like? You: electronica Rosette: I like this edgey music. Goes well with robot demolition contests. You: edgey?

well if you are a male over 15 and you use the internet chances are you've come across it. (pun intended) you don't even have to be that curious, it could be a simple mistype (i got an eyeful trying to find www.boots.com) or that email from that dodgy workmate that's been doing the rounds... porn has been around for centuries, generally hidden and for the select few, thanks to the internet it is now just a couple of clicks away, and if you have children that has to be a worry because you can say a lot of things about porn but it ain't romantic or innocent and i suspect it isn't particularly good for the soul.
but then, what is the difference between erotica and porn? why did fiercely intellegent journalist, broadcaster, poker player and all round good egg, victoria coren make a porn/erotic film? porn isn't going to go away, we are sexual beings after all, we have to learn how to navigate/negociate/avoid/appreciate it... and a bit of self http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117318/">censorship</a> probably wouldn't go amiss.

this years' galapagos conservation trust lecture and dinner was very enjoyable again. this years guest speaker was the bbc's environment correspondent, david shukman, excellent. i asked a question about education. at the dinner i sat next to charles darwin's great great grandson, randal keynes, who talked very passionately about darwin's wife emma, a devout christian, (randal is an atheist himself), but who also loved and supported her husband whole heartedly, had a difficult balancing of her faith and love...
'you ought to write a book', i said 'i did he said...
a little further into the conversation... 'you know, this would make such a great film...' ...he smiled 'yes, it's called 'creation''
on my other side sat lara from san diego, who used to be in finance, but was now working for the princes trust for architecture helping build sustainable housing on the galapagos whose population is booming because of the tourist trade... lalala...hiho...
cool evening. thanks again m&d!... food for thought...
