oil explosion [Dec. 11th, 2005|08:11 am]
8 or so bees in my bonnet
[music |the news]

man. that was scary.
i had just woken up when the house was rocked by a massive explosion.
meteorite? plane?
(books fell off my shelf).
i shot out of bed, got dressed and grabbed a torch and my camera,
because i thought that it had to be within a few hundred yards from where i was.
there were lots of other people on the street thinking exactly the same. all the car and shop alarms had gone off and 4 or 5 shop windows had been blown out.
but we couldn't see anything. we heard two more large explosions and then you could tell it was quite some distance away.

putting on the news, i live about 3 miles from the scene. i've just been out to take some photos of the mushroom cloud and you can smell the burning oil in the air. it is some blessing that this happened at 6am on a sunday morning or flying glass injuries would have been extensive. fortunately everyone i know round here lives in the opposite direction apart from my folks and they're okay.

WOW!

i awoke to the BBC news on NPR about this. i'm glad it happened so early on a Sunday so not many were hurt!

when i was a kid, an oil refinery on the edge of the city where i was living blew up in the early morning in a similar sort of way; i'll never forget that sound and the windows vibrating in their frames in the aftermath as i was still shaking off sleep.

i'm so glad that you're okay, and that you don't have a lot of worries about the people that you love. stay safe, and my prayers go out to the injured.

Wow, that is something.

30+ years ago I lived in LA and during a summer storm lighning set off a large oil tank it burned for weeks with a huge smoke plume. They had to pump the oil out of it from below to get the fire out.
