8 or so bees in my bonnet
|||||david fanshawe-african sanctus||]|
went to listen to my mum singing in african sanctus.
it is a mixture between a christian mass and found recordings of african music.the composer was there and did a talk beforehand. he's quite the mad professor.
i'd never heard it before but when my mum described it to me
i thought that's my kind of thing. and it was.
think a muslim call to prayer, a egyptian wedding drum jam, frogs, a thunderstorm and a rather moving ugandan home made harp all mixed with a 100 strong western choir singing a mass. some pieces worked better than others. but the bits that gelled were inspiring.
the live drums were provided by the backbeat percussion quartet
who did a couple of their own numbers at the beginning.
the marimba and vibraphone are such luscious and evocative instruments.
the only thing the concert lacked was a bar and people dancing in the aisles but i guess that would be unlikely in an abbey.
i was sat right behind the very lovely yolande though (charity worker chicks are so hot!)
