|21st century slavery

8 or so bees in my bonnet

my knowledge of slavery was somewhat patchy to say the least
until i saw this intelligent and enlightening program (well done bbc4)
william wilberforce is one of my heroes of course
but he was really only the spearhead
i hadn't heard of Olaudah Equiano
and how he, with the quakers, mobilised the fledgling british trade union movement in the 18th century anti-slavery campaign.
so here we are, 200 years on, celebrating.
it was a momentous step forward.
but before we get all cosy,
slavery still goes on
and 'white pride' still gets all riled.
how about a minutes' silence for the countless nameless victims?
well, maybe 15 seconds at least...

You should have come to church last Sunday morning to hear about more unsung heroes, some risking life & limb to escape their masters, then working tirelessly to expose the terrible travelling 7 working conditions.
You'll be pleased to know as a champion & faithful buyer of "Fair trade" goods that this too was well publicised for those who thought slavery was over.
A minutes silence would be an excellent idea. You should organise one.
