the picture is of an old sun measurement device. you put a graduated piece of paper behind the crystal ball and it literally burns a record of the hours of sunshine. of course it's all done digitally these days. i was sorely tempted to unscrew the whole thing and sell it on ebay. but i managed to curb my cleptomaniacal tendencies. on the the way back home i picked up these pieces of western detrius:

this was a label amongst a patch of willow that all had numbers consisting of nc6xxxx it was the only broken one i saw and it read: Tora. weird.
